A Little About Me

     I’ve been fortunate academic and extracurricular benefits throughout my college career have allowed me to pursue my passion, which began when I was just 14 years old. Journalists like Peter Jennings inspired me by their commitment to integrity and ethics, motivating me to join the cadre of reporters exposing the weaknesses of our society to help effectuate change and, thus, promote democracy. I began putting my theory of journalism being a vehicle for social change to practice in high school by writing three articles on subjects that dealt with community building in profiling a professor and socially important issues of politics and education for a summer journalism camp.

      A virtuous and upstanding reporter is a contributing member of society, who has responsibilities outside of employment. Joining Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society of the Two-Year College at Delaware County Community College allowed me to interact with a community that not only can effectuate change in a small way, but also can build trust between reporter and source. I contributed to the larger causes of cancer research and Louisiana coast aid by volunteering for Alex’s Lemonade Stand and being a member of the chapter’s Hurricane Katrina Committee, which raised over $1,000 in donations. I wrote for the college’s monthly newspaper, “The Communitarian,” graduating with an associate degree in communication arts, a 3.8 GPA, and a position every year on the dean’s list—the latter following me to Penn State, where I had the pleasure of interviewing former Enron executive Lynn Brewer and eating breakfast with Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter of The Washington Post Dana Priest, who is famous for her coverage of the Walter Reed Army Medical Center and a journalist I would like to emulate.
